Tafseer of Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas: The Three Surahs of Protection

Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas are three of the most frequently recited Surahs in daily life. Here is what each one means and why the Prophet ﷺ recommended reciting them for protection.

Why Are Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas Called the Three Surahs of Protection?

These three short Surahs are called the Surahs of protection because the Prophet ﷺ specifically recommended reciting them for refuge from harm, and together they cover belief, protection from unseen evil, and protection from personal whispering. Al-Ikhlas establishes correct belief in Allah's oneness, while Al-Falaq and An-Nas are direct supplications asking for refuge — one from external harm, the other from internal whispering. Scholars often study the three together because they were revealed close in theme, even though Al-Ikhlas addresses belief and the other two address protection.

What Does Surah Al-Ikhlas Teach About Allah?

Surah Al-Ikhlas teaches that Allah is one, self-sufficient, and without equal — He was not born, does not give birth, and nothing resembles Him. Despite being only four short verses, classical scholars describe Al-Ikhlas as equal in reward to a third of the Quran, because it condenses the core of Islamic belief about Allah's nature into a single, unambiguous statement. This is why it is one of the first Surahs taught after Al-Fatiha — belief in Allah's oneness underlies everything else studied in Tafseer.

What Does Surah Al-Falaq Protect Against?

Surah Al-Falaq is a supplication asking Allah for refuge from the evil of what He created, the darkness of night, those who practice harmful magic, and the envy of an envier. Each verse names a specific category of harm rather than speaking in vague terms, which is a pattern Tafseer highlights across the Surah — the reciter is not asking for general protection but naming precise sources of potential harm and asking refuge from each one.

What Does Surah An-Nas Protect Against?

Surah An-Nas is a supplication asking Allah for refuge specifically from the whispering of Shaytan, whether from an unseen source or from other people. Where Al-Falaq addresses external and unseen harm, An-Nas turns inward, addressing the whispering that can affect a person's own thoughts and intentions. Reciting both together, as is traditionally done, covers protection from both outward and inward sources of harm.

Why Does the Prophet ﷺ Recommend Reciting Them Daily?

Authentic narrations describe the Prophet ﷺ reciting Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas as part of his regular morning and evening remembrance. Because they are short, easy to memorize, and cover both belief and protection, they are typically among the first Surahs a new student memorizes and among the first covered in Module 1 of the Tafseer course, alongside Surah Al-Fatiha.
