Quran Recitation Styles (Qirat)
Explore the rich diversity of authentic Quranic recitation traditions.
Each of the ten Qira'at is a complete, preserved recitation tradition with its own chain of transmission back to the Prophet ﷺ.
What This Course Is About
Most Muslims are familiar with only one way of reciting the Quran — the Hafs an Asim recitation. But the Quran was revealed with a breadth and flexibility that accommodated different tribes and communities of the Arabian Peninsula, resulting in seven primary modes (Ahruf) and ten certified Qira'at, each one complete, authentic, and preserved through unbroken chains of transmission.
Our Qirat program opens the door to this beautiful tradition. Students begin by deepening their understanding of Hafs an Asim before exploring other widely studied Qira'at such as Warsh an Nafi, Qalun an Nafi, and beyond. Each Qira'a has its own unique rules of pronunciation, elongation, and sometimes even word choices that differ from Hafs — all of them authentic and authorised.
This course is particularly valuable for advanced Quran students, scholars, Imams, and those seeking an Ijazah in multiple Qira'at. It is an advanced program that requires a solid foundation in Quran reading and Tajweed before enrollment.
