What Is Sabaqi in Hifz?
Sabaqi, also called Manzil, is the short-term revision of the lessons a student memorized over the past few days. Where Sabak is brand-new material, Sabaqi is the bridge between memorizing something once and knowing it permanently. It is recited early — usually while it is still fresh but not yet fully settled — to catch any part that is already starting to slip.
How Much Sabaqi Does a Student Review Each Day?
A student typically reviews the last three to seven days of Sabak lessons as Sabaqi, in addition to memorizing new material that same day. The exact range depends on how much new Sabak was assigned; a larger daily Sabak usually means a shorter Sabaqi window, since the student has less spare recall capacity for reviewing older lessons on the same day.
Why Does Skipping Sabaqi Cause Students to Forget?
Skipping Sabaqi causes forgetting because newly memorized verses have not yet moved from short-term to long-term memory. A verse memorized once and never revisited within the first week fades quickly, often within days, because the brain has not repeated it enough times to store it durably. This is the single most common reason students who "memorize fast" also forget fast — they move on to new Sabak without giving Sabaqi enough attention.

How Is Sabaqi Different From Dhor?
Sabaqi covers the last few days of lessons, while Dhor is a rotating review of everything memorized since the student began Hifz. Sabaqi protects material that is still fragile. Dhor protects material that should already be solid but can still fade over months without periodic revisiting. A student needs both — Sabaqi alone does not prevent long-term decay, and Dhor alone does not catch fresh mistakes in time.

How Does a Teacher Check Sabaqi Progress?
A teacher checks Sabaqi by asking the student to recite the assigned days' portions from memory, usually at the start of each class before new Sabak is introduced. Any hesitation or mistake during Sabaqi is flagged immediately and re-revised, rather than left until the material moves into the longer Dhor rotation.
